PWANI DIOCESE

Brief History

AICT began at Nassa station in 1909 under the work of two missionaries Emil and Marie Sywulka who worked under AIM (Africa Inland Mission) which replaced CMS (Church Missionary Society). These missionaries worked with some indigenous evangelists who volunteered to preach the gospel without pay to their own countrymen and women. The earliest mission stations besides Nassa were started, including Mwanza, Nera and Chamugasa.

The missionary work was effective because of the partnership that existed between indigenous workers and foreign missionaries. For instance, the evangelistic outreaches were carried out in teams that planted churches in different parts of Sukuma land. After planting many churches and training nationals, AIM handled the church to nationals in 1963. While the name AICT came to being in 1958. From 1963 AICT was functioning under one bishop as the chief overseer and one executive council. Jeremiah Mahalu Kisula was the first bishop of the AICT. The church expanded and they decided to decentralize and divide the church into dioceses. In 1993, AICT was divided into five dioceses. Currently AICT has six dioceses named: Pwani, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Mara & Ukerewe, Geita and Tabora.

AICT Pwani Diocese was established in 1994 following expansion of the church activities in the coast regions. The first bishop of the PD was Bish. Paul Methusela Nyagwaswa and the current bishop is Bish. Charles S. Salalah. This is the missionary diocese focusing on reaching the unreached groups with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Currently Pwani Diocese is serving 14 regions namely Pwani, Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Morogoro, Dodoma, Singida, Iringa, Mbeya, Ruvuma, Mtwara, Lindi and Dar-Es- Salaam.
